Ways to Combat Anxiety

Hi friends, happy Thursday! Today is World Mental Health Day and I wanted to talk to you all about it! If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’d know that I’ve been struggling with anxiety for years. I’ve talked about it many times on the blog and i’ve even done a podcast episode about my anxiety story and how i’ve overcome it. I still struggle some days, but I’ve worked really hard on overcoming my anxiety struggles and I wanted to talk about that today. I’ve come to realize that there are certain things that calm me down and help relieve my anxious mind. Here are some of the things I do when I’m having an anxiety attack or need to calm myself down!

Having a routine

Having a routine really helps me feel less anxious throughout the week. I like knowing when most things are going to happen. Although it doesn’t work out that way every single day, it’s nice to have a bit of structure in your life. I make a habit tracker every month and will sit down every night to cross off what i’ve done for the day. It helps keep me on track and helps me make sure I’m taking care of myself even when i’m not feeling up to it!

Exercising

People say this all the time and I was the first person to say no to it… until I actually tried it. Sometimes if I’m feeling a little anxious I will go an do a workout at the gym or I’ll pop in my headphones and go for a long walk. Most of the time it makes me feel better!

Distracting myself

Distracting myself is the number one way I get through my panic attacks. I’ll either turn on a funny youtube video or scroll through instagram stories. Having someone else talk has me focus on what they are saying and will distract me from any anxious thoughts I’m having.

Talking to someone

Whether it’s a friend, family member or even a therapist, talking to someone about what is making me anxious really helps me calm down. Even if it’s the most ridiculous thing, I need to talk to someone so I can verbally work through my feelings

Sleeping

Sometimes just being able to lay down and sleep really calms me down. It shuts off my brain for a little bit and I usually wake up well-rested and a lot less anxious. I notice that if I don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep at night I wake up feeling really anxious and restless. Sleep is so beneficial to our health and sometimes it helps relax us as well.

Taking my medicine

I’ve been taking anxiety medicine since I was 17 and I can honestly say it’s one of the main reasons I am able to even live my life. Before taking medicine, I was barely able to leave my house without having a full blown panic attack. A lot of people feel ashamed if they take medicine, but they shouldn’t! It helps so many people every single day. If you are struggling with anxiety, my first tip is to see a therapist but if you need a little extra help, it’s okay to consider going on anxiety medication!

If you struggle with anxiety, just know that you are not alone! There is always someone there that is willing to help you. Please reach out to someone! Your mental health and well-being is so important!
